Summer Heat Safety: Protecting Your Pet in the Santa Clarita Valley

Summer in the Santa Clarita Valley means long days, hiking trails, and temperatures that can climb well past 100°F. While we enjoy the sunshine, our pets face real risks from the heat — and every summer, we treat cases that could have been prevented.

Know the Signs of Heat Stroke

Heat stroke can escalate quickly. Watch for these warning signs:

  • Excessive panting that doesn't slow down after resting
  • Drooling more than usual, especially thick or sticky saliva
  • Lethargy or wobbling — your pet seems disoriented or unsteady
  • Vomiting or diarrhea that comes on suddenly
  • Bright red gums or tongue

If you notice any of these symptoms, move your pet to a cool area immediately, offer small amounts of water, and call us right away. Do not use ice-cold water — cool water is safer and more effective.

The Pavement Test

Before any walk, place the back of your hand on the asphalt for five seconds. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your pet's paws. In Santa Clarita, pavement can reach 150°F on a 95°F day.

Walk your dog early in the morning or after sunset. Stick to grass or shaded trails when possible.

Hydration Matters More Than You Think

A 50-pound dog needs roughly 50 ounces of water per day — more during exercise or heat. Carry water on every walk, and make sure bowls at home stay full and fresh.

Signs of dehydration include:

  • Dry or tacky gums
  • Skin that doesn't snap back when gently pulled
  • Sunken eyes
  • Low energy

Cars Are Never Safe

Even with windows cracked, a car's interior can reach 120°F in minutes on a 90°F day. Never leave your pet in a parked car — not even for a quick errand. In California, it's also illegal.

When to Call Us

If your pet shows signs of heat distress, don't wait. Call us at (661) 222-7387 and we can advise you over the phone while you cool them down. For severe cases, come directly to the clinic — we keep same-day slots open for urgent situations.

Heat-related illness is serious, but it's also almost entirely preventable. A little planning goes a long way toward keeping your pet safe all summer.
